Combating Empty Nest

Often parents of college and university students experience empty nest syndrome when their children head off to college. There are several things parents can to minimize the effect or help them overcome this experience. Some things parents can do include but are not limited to:

  • Rely on friends and family for support.
  • Buy prepaid telephone phone vouchers or calling cards so that its easier to keep in touch.
  • Schedule a weekly phone calls.
  • Send your child brief e-mails of what’s happening at home.
  • Send care packages with groceries, linens, money or any useful items.
  • Explore or return to hobbies, leisure activities or career pursuits.
