College is Different from High School
If you’re finishing up your high school days and have your sight set on getting a college degree, keep in mind that colleges are different than high schools in several ways…
- First of, in college, you are expected to think on your own. You will be challenged to demonstrate some insight as often the teaching material has no ‘right’ answer, but theory and hypotheses.
- The reading assignments in college can be long. You may be required to read a many pages for just one class session while in college. You should make the necessary time to read what is required by breaking your reading assignments down into manageable time modules.
- In college you will be expected to take notes in every class. Your own notes are sometimes the only material you will have access to in order to study for a test. Be sure you take thorough notes that you will be able to decipher when it comes time to study for that big exam.
- Some college classes use a grading curve to assign grades that is based on class performance on the test, and this is especially true if you are studying the sciences. Although not completely fair, this is often done, so be prepared.
- You will be required to write more papers in college than you had to in high school. Be sure you understand the material when writing a paper as your grade may depend on it.
Knowing that your college degree programs will be different from your high school programs will get you prepared for success on your road to earning a college degree.
