Higher Degree Origins

According to an interesting Wikipedia article, “the terms “master”, “doctor”, and “professor” signify different levels of academic achievement, but initially they were equivalent terms. The University of Bologna in Italy, regarded as the oldest university in Europe, was the first institution to confer the degree of Doctor in Civil Law in the late 12th century; it also conferred similar degrees in other subjects including medicine. Note that medicine is now the only field in which the title “doctor” is commonly applied, albeit informally, to individuals who have only obtained their first academic qualification. The University of Paris used the term master for its graduates, a practice adopted by the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as the ancient Scottish universities of St Andrew’s, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh”.Referenced Source(s): Wikipedia

University Origins

The first universities were founded in ancient India in Taxila (Takshashila University) and Nalanda (Nalanda University) in the 7th century BC and 5th century BC respectively, followed by Byzantium in the 5th century (in Constantinopolis and Athens). The first university in the Islamic world was founded in Cairo (Al-Azhar University) in the 10th century, while in western Europe, universities were founded in the 12th and 13th centuries. Candidates who had completed three or four years of study in the prescribed texts of the trivium (grammar, rhetoric, and logic), and who had successfully passed examinations held by their masters, would be admitted to a bachelor’s degree. Thus a degree was only a step on the way to becoming a fully qualified master – hence the English word “graduate”, which is based on the Latin gradus(“step”).

Exploring Empty Nest Syndrome

Empty nest syndrome, a condition frequently experienced by parents of college and university bound students, is defined by leading psychologists, “refers to feelings of depression, sadness, and/or grief experienced by parents and caregivers after children come of age and leave their childhood homes. This may occur when children go to college or get married. Women are more likely than men to be affected; often, when the nest is emptying, mothers are going through other significant life events as well, such as menopause or caring for elderly parents. More mothers work these days and therefore feel less emptiness when their children leave home. Also, an increasing number of adult children between 25 and 34 are now living at home”.Referenced Source(s): Psychology Today

Away from Home

Just like there are benefits for college and university students to attend school near home, there are also added advantages of going to college away from home. Students can gain a great deal of independence living away from the comforts of home, which will be integral to their future growth. Although many parents become faced with “empty nest syndrome”, they are sure to find more time to pursue their own interests and goals with the comfort of knowing that their students are in a safe and beneficial environment where they will be able to explore their educational pursuits. Many parents are even enrolling in college degree programs themselves to pick up where they left off in their own educational paths.Referenced Source(s):

Close to Home

College and university students and their parents sometimes wrestle with the dilemma of where the student should attend to pursue their studies. The geographic location of the schools the students choose to go to can have a lot of ramifications, mostly related to finances. If college students attend school close to home, they will not need to incur additional charges for housing, food and transportation. They will also benefit from in-state tuition rates. Most parents also like to have their students close to home in case of emergency. Another benefit of attending college close to home includes the fact that students will still have ready access to friends, counselors and other supporting individuals that have been there for them as they have ascended the education ladder.Referenced Source(s):

Making the Transition

Generally, there are a number of factors that influence the student’s decision of where they should attend including their college degree program preference, their career goals, their financial resources, their academic performance, geographic considerations and so on. Obviously students will opt to attend a school that is more geared towards their interests and educational and career plans. Unusual Top Student

The Minnesota Monthly recently featured Tina Nimz as their student of the month. It is interesting to note note that Tina is not the typical student, she is 40 years old, married and the mother of 3 children. She already has a nursing degree but decided to go back to college to pursue her other passion in art and design. She began by attending part time in her first year and then accelerated her college degree program by attending full-time for the next 3 years. She is a great role model for her peers and another example of how a person can literally change their life and pursue their dreams through higher education with determination and hard work.Referenced Source(s): Minnesota Monthly
