There are a number of reasons that there are so many adults returning to their college and university educations. Many have had common life situations that may have side tracked or delayed their higher education plans. Some of the most common reasons for this include but are not limited to at least one of the following:
Limited financial resources although, with a plethora of public and private educational funding organizations and streams this is not really a deterrent these days;
New families, especially with young children, the time and monetary demands can certainly seem overwhelming and less of a priority to young parents;
Military service, although all branches of the United States military not only encourage continued education among their ranks but have even developed and refined programs to allow troops to attend.

The United States Department of Education reported that as many as 13 percent of students enrolled in college are single parents. This report lends credence to the fact that many adults are taking steps to help enhance their educations and potentially greatly improve their lives and those of their children and family. There are very few motivators as strong as a parents desire to make sure that their children have everything that they need to develop and grow into successful individuals in all of their pursuits. Parents often find that when their young children reach school age, they have a great deal more time to pursue their education and career goals. It is no wonder that, with his new-found time, many parents are taking full advantage of college degree programs while their children are at school, to use to help their own career advancement.Referenced Source(s):

An interesting career path for science enthusiasts would be in the filed of atmospheric science. Atmospheric scientists generally earn between $48, 000 and $106,000 per year. The minimum educational requirements for atmospheric scientists are a bachelor’s degree in meteorology or atmospheric science, or in a closely related field with courses in meteorology. It is interesting to note that the United States government employs 4 out of 10 of the 7400 atmospheric scientists in the country. The Department of Defense, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service are the primary government agencies that utilize atmospheric scientists.

Another financial aid source commonly used by university and college students is the Federal Stafford Loan. These are student loans that are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. These federal loans do have to be paid back by students. According to the regulations governing Federal Stafford Loans, all eligible first-year college students are qualified for up to $2,625. The amount of the loan can increase for each additional year of study the student participates in. Federal Stafford Loans carry a variable interest rate the will never go over 8.25% and, for subsidized loans, the government pays the interest while students are actively attending college.

Many college-bound students have gone through their high school counseling department to find out more information about obtaining financial aid to attend their preferred college or university. Usually, the first step for students and their parents to take is to fill out and submit a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. This form enables financial aid administrators to determine which federal financial aid programs a student is eligible to receive. Once the FAFSA has been completed and submitted, students will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which will provide a summary of the students FAFSA information. Students should also receive an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) document.Â
