Escalating Education Costs

Author Kathleen Porter’s article on the “ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education Washington DC” states, “The escalating cost of higher education is causing many to question the value of continuing education beyond high school. Many wonder whether the high cost of tuition, the opportunity cost of choosing college over full-time employment, and the accumulation of thousands of dollars of debt is, in the long run, worth the investment.
The risk is especially large for low-income families who have a difficult time making ends meet without the additional burden of college tuition and fees.In order to determine whether higher education is worth the investment, it is useful to examine what is known about the value of higher education and the rates of return on investment to both the individual and to society.”

Campus Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool Website

The Department of Education has noted the usefulness of the Campus Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool Website. This website and the information it contains is provided by Office of Postsecondary Education of the U. S. Department of Education. This analysis cutting tool was designed to provide rapid customized reports for public inquiries relating to campus crime data. The data are drawn from the OPE Campus Security Statistics Website database to which crime statistics are submitted annually, via a Web-based data collection, by all postsecondary institutions that receive Title IV funding (i.e., those that participate in federal student aid programs) as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

College Housing and Facilities Program

Another discontinued program scheduled for closeout is the College Housing and Facilities Program. This program provided low interest loans to eligible graduate and undergraduate institutions of higher education for the construction, reconstruction, or renovation of academic, housing, and other educational facilities for students and faculty. These loans ranged from $250,000 to $2,000,000, and were provided to colleges and universities for up to 30 years based on priorities selected by the Secretary of Education. The main factor contributing to the discontinuation of this program was funding. The College Housing and Facilities Program provided many academic institutions with much need funding for the improvement and enhancement of student-oriented buildings.
