With all of the organizations from scam operations to degraded academic institutions out there that offer bogus college degree programs, it is hard for students and professionals to know how to avoid them and find a legitimate institution to take online classes. A few questions they should ask themselves and in some cases should ask potential institutions to help determine if that institution is not a diploma mill are:
Â
- Can you buy accreditation?
- Do they falsely claim to be recognized by Department of Education approved accrediting agencies?
- Do any of the approved accrediting agencies know who they are?
- Does the timeframe to complete the programs seem impossibly short?
- Do they provide any quality standards in writing?
- Does the name sound very similar to a well-known institution?
- Do they have a verifiable physical address?
- Do your accomplishments coincide with the fees you pay?

The Oregon Student Assistance Commission identifies several states that are a lot more tolerable to companies and organizations that claim to provide college degree programs and professional certifications. Among this list of states, Idaho, Hawaii, Montana, Alabama, Wyoming, Mississippi and California have either no meaningful standards, excessive loopholes or poor enforcement owing to local policy or insufficient staff. Degrees issued by unaccredited private colleges in Alabama, Idaho, Mississippi or Wyoming should be evaluated with great caution. In particular, Mississippi has no oversight standards. Students and professionals should keep this in mind when they are seeking to complete or continue the education.

Many individuals and agencies mistakenly believe that any organization with the .edu TLD in their website name are legitimate colleges or universities but, in fact, there are many companies that are basically either diploma mills or unaccredited schools. Having a .edu website extension has no bearing whatsoever on the quality or authenticity of the educational programs being offered. The Oregon Student Assistance Commission goes so far as to identify certain states that have either more lenient policies and have little or no standards in regard to the claims of organizations to be legitimate academic institutions providing college degree programs and professional certifications.
