There is another useful tax credit for college and university students and their families known as the Hope Credit. The Hope Credit bears some similarity to the Lifetime Learning Credit but is also quite different. One of the main differences is the fact that taxpayers can claim the Hope Credit based on the same student’s expenses for no more than 2 years whereas, there is no limit on the number of years for which you can claim a Lifetime Learning Credit based on the same student’s expenses. With the Hope Credit, students in the first two years of college (or other eligible post-secondary training), will be eligible for a tax credit equal to 100% of the first $1,000 of tuition and fees and 50% of the second $1,000.

In 1998, the federal government provided another great tax break that college and university students and parents may qualify for – the Lifetime Learning Credit. Eligible taxpayers can claim a nonrefundable Lifetime Learning Credit against their federal income taxes. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “The Lifetime Learning Credit may be claimed for the qualified tuition and related expenses of the students in the taxpayer’s family (i.e., the taxpayer, the taxpayer’s spouse, or an eligible dependent) who are enrolled in eligible educational institutions.” The credit amount individuals or families are able to file is equal to 20 percent of the taxpayer’s first $10,000 of out-of-pocket qualified tuition and related educational expenses. This applies to the taxpayer, the taxpayer’s spouse, or an eligible dependent that are enrolled in eligible educational institutions.

Many students and professionals sometimes face daunting financial situations when they seek funding for their college degree. Graduate students alone typically face college costs like tuition and living expenses that can cost over $30k per year. Most students that do not have the economic background to enable them to attend college free of financial worries rely on a combination of student loans, grants and work income to allow them to attend college and eventually obtain their degrees. Some graduate students are able to cash in on an assistantship or fellowship that covers most of their expenses. Typically these fellowships or assistantships provide money for tuition, fees, stipends and, in many cases, even health insurance coverage is provided.

College and university students and parents will be relieved to know that recent legislation appears to be going through its paces to help reduce the interest rates on federal loans by almost half. The proposed changes would help reduce the interest rate on federal loans from the current 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. Congress and the President have been aware of and have been taking the necessary steps to initiate a major reform in the student loan industry, which is estimated to be an $85 billion dollar a year industry. Investigations into shady transactions between universities and lenders revealed that students were bearing the brunt of the under-handed deals in the form of high student costs.

The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 requires all U.S. educational institutions to implement certain campus policies and procedures to help ensure the safety of their students. Colleges and universities must be in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act also known as the Clery Act.
The Clery Act required all postsecondary institutions participating in Title IV student financial aid programs to disclose campus crime statistics and security information. The importance and benefits of maintaining high standards of safety for college students and staff should always be one of if not the highest priority on college and university campuses.

Colleges and Universities around the nation could be affected by the recent legislation related to the HR 4283, also known as the College Access and Opportunity Act. In 2004, House Republicans John Boehner and Buck McKeon presented this bill to Congress. The main focus of the bill was to make federal financial aid programs available to students and the criteria used in determining eligibility for these programs.
Some experts fear this legislation will make the industry more vulnerable to degree mills, also known as diploma mills since these less-than-legitimate organizations will be able to offer financial aid to their unsuspecting enrollees, thus guaranteeing funding while simultaneously providing an unaccredited education.

Another advantage of online college degree programs is the availability of professors or their assistants to answer question students may have about course topics. With online classes, students are not limited to asking questions strictly during class as they would be in a traditional campus classroom. Generally, an inquiry emailed to the online course administrator, usually a professor or other qualified individual, can be quickly answered with an email reply.
This means of Q&A also helps keep questions clear and concise since it is written and avoids any tangents that may arise. Another advantage of this means of communication is that the answers to questions do not have to wait until the next day the class is being held. A professor could answer an eager student’s question from home while eating dinner or checking other email without any major disruption to their personal lives as a phone call or unscheduled visit would cause.
