Finding the Way

There are many subjects and career paths students must choose from during their enrollment in college degree programs. The sheer volume of choices can be very overwhelming to some students and their parents. The best way for students who may not be totally sure of their future career path to narrow down their options is to speak to a guidance counselor or college representative. These individuals can help students with broad ranges of interests focus on the subjects and areas of study that are best suited to their dreams, aspirations, personalities and abilities. These individuals are almost like professional employment placement specialists except they administer their influence before students get out into the real workplace.

Taking Online Courses Can Be Safe

An interesting side effect of the rapidly growing number of colleges and universities offering online college degree programs is the fact that students are unlikely to become victims of campus crime. Parents, teachers, administrators and researchers have been all been outraged by many incidences of crime on college campuses. Campus crimes usually range from petty theft to physical assault and, in the worse case scenario, date rape. This is not to say crime at large does not exist or is any less possible than crimes committed on academic grounds, however, some students and professionals can fully appreciate the benefits of doing their degree and certification studies from the comfort and safety of their homes.

Education Saving Accounts (ESA)

One of the latest trends in attaining financial aid for college and university students include so called “education IRA’s”. There are several different types of this financial aid sources which are not, in fact, true IRA’s or Individual Retirement Accounts since they do not in any way relate to retirement. These financial aid alternatives are really Education Savings Accounts or ESA’s. Funds that are contributed to an ESA can be used to pay for elementary and secondary education expenses, college or university expenses, private school tuition and the like without incurring any tax for the contribution. An additional benefit of an ESA is that any unused funds can be transferred or “rolled over” to another family member.

Getting Money for College

Many college and university students and their parents mistakenly believe that they do not qualify for any type of financial aid for students to attend college. These individuals often spend thousands of dollars that do not have to spend due to numerous financial aid sources. Some of the most popular funding sources for students are provided by the Federal government. These include the Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan, Federal Perkins Loan and the Federal PLUS Loan. The first step students should take towards securing financial aid is to submit a FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid to find out which Federal financial aid programs they may qualify for. The next step would be to apply for other, non-federal grant and scholarship programs offered by both public and private organizations.
