Education Levels

In a recent article by the College Board titled 2007 Trends in Higher Education Series: Education Pays, research revealed certain facts that should not be too surprising.

The document points out what most people already know which is that education has a huge influence on the personal and economic growth of individuals. Having a college education can also help open more opportunities for advancement in the workplace.

The document states that, College graduates have significantly higher earnings than high school graduates. In 2006, median earnings for bachelor’s degree holders between the ages of 25 and 34 working full-time were $13,900 higher than median earnings of high school graduates working full-time. For workers between the ages of 45 and 54, the median earnings gap was $22,900.

Rising College Costs

Author Kathleen Porter’s article on the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education Washington DC states, The escalating cost of higher education is causing many to question the value of continuing education beyond high school.

Many wonder whether the high cost of tuition, the opportunity cost of choosing college over full-time employment, and the accumulation of thousands of dollars of debt is, in the long run, worth the investment.

The risk is especially large for low-income families who have a difficult time making ends meet without the additional burden of college tuition and fees.In order to determine whether higher education is worth the investment, it is useful to examine what is known about the value of higher education and the rates of return on investment to both the individual and to society.

Online or OnCampus

There are many pros and cons to taking online college degree programs instead of traditional on-campus courses.

The main benefit of online degree programs are that they allow students to earn their degrees in a self-paced environment that also allows them to work a full-time job and/or raise children without the added stress of going to a campus.

Some uninformed individuals may believe that an online degree is inferior or less valid than a degree attained through conventional classroom work, this is incorrect. In fact, earning an online degree not only requires a good degree of self-discipline, they usually require more writing.

Federal PLUS Loan

The Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), is a low interest government loan program that can be used to help fund a student’s college education. PLUS loans are generally offered by private loan institutions, banks and federal credit unions.

The PLUS loan basically lets parents supplement other financial aid they may obtain and borrow up to the remaining cost for students to attend college. These costs may include any or all of the following common expenses: tuition, room and board, supplies, lab expenses and travel costs.

Another perk of this loan is that the interest is tax deductible so parents have a means to recoup some of their expenses.
