Parents and students all over the country are struggling to raise money for college, but soon they could be in for a big surprise as the higher education tax credit could give them a tax refund of up to $2,500.
The tax credit is a part of the stimulus bill that was signed into effect in February of 2008. This is expected to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to Americans who are paying tuition this year. Even better, students do not have to complete any extra financial aid applications to get the money. They just have to file their taxes accurately and on time. This is welcome news for students enrolling in college degree programs.
The rules are a bit complicated, but the new credit is bigger than previous higher education tax credits that only gave about $900. Not every student is qualified as it is only available for undergrads who attend college at least half time.
These students must have gross incomes of less than $80,000 if they are single and $160,000 if filing jointly in order to qualify. The tax credit is a good incentive for college students and their parents and comes at a time when it is sorely needed.
For households with multiple students attending college the program is great. If parents have four students in college for example, they are eligible for each of their children. This tax credit is greatly appreciated and highly anticipated by students and parents alike.

If you’re finishing up your high school days and have your sight set on getting a college degree, keep in mind that colleges are different than high schools in several ways…
- First of, in college, you are expected to think on your own. You will be challenged to demonstrate some insight as often the teaching material has no ‘right’ answer, but theory and hypotheses.
- The reading assignments in college can be long. You may be required to read a many pages for just one class session while in college. You should make the necessary time to read what is required by breaking your reading assignments down into manageable time modules.
- In college you will be expected to take notes in every class. Your own notes are sometimes the only material you will have access to in order to study for a test. Be sure you take thorough notes that you will be able to decipher when it comes time to study for that big exam.
- Some college classes use a grading curve to assign grades that is based on class performance on the test, and this is especially true if you are studying the sciences. Although not completely fair, this is often done, so be prepared.
- You will be required to write more papers in college than you had to in high school. Be sure you understand the material when writing a paper as your grade may depend on it.
Knowing that your college degree programs will be different from your high school programs will get you prepared for success on your road to earning a college degree.

Many colleges and universities are catering to the working adult, but unfortunately not enough are getting on board. Colleges offer flexible class schedules and distant learning options, so earning a college degree is well within reach of most adults these days.
The schools who offer the most appealing programs are usually private schools and technical colleges. Not all public colleges offer conveniences to the working person. Classes are sometimes not available that fit into a busy work schedule, and classes are not always offered online.
This leaves working adults little choice but to attend the smaller and more expensive technical and private schools. It is hardly worth all the effort, considering the large debt they will rack up after finishing these expensive programs.
There are over 70 million adults in the United States who wish to go back to school. It is hard to understand why the more affordable public universities are not trying to tap into this market. This is something that should change so that all adults who wish to earn college degrees may do so.

The cost of attending college is constantly rising. The average cost at a public university will be around $8,200 this year and around $21,000 per year at a private institution.
Finding the money to pay for a college education can be challenging. College degree programs are not cheap, but there are things a high school student can do to prepare to meet the financial demands.
High school students should focus on academics and extracurricular activities while in high school. If you score high on the SAT and ACT tests, you will be more qualified to receive a scholarship. Help others with their homework and projects to gain more knowledge, which will no doubt raise your test scores.
If you work while in high school, you can save a good amount of money to go towards paying for your college education. You still live at home, so the savings could be considerable.
Be sure to be realistic about what school you will attend. Consider going to a local college or university so you can still live at home. This will save you thousands of dollars every year.
You can apply for financial aid from the government to help you pay for college. Fill out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. You can do this online at their website, and it is critical that you do this before trying to get federal aid.

In today’s career climate, it is imperative for a child to get a proper college education in order to be competitive and succeed in life.
Obtaining a college education is expensive and many people simply cannot afford it. Most students need some type of financial assistance to help pay for college. There are ways that parents and students can get help from the government in the form of loans and grants.
A student can apply for assistance from the government. This is called federal aid. There are many federal programs that give students loans by calculating the student’s need by assessing the student or the parent’s income.
The best type of aid is most likely a grant. This gives a student financial assistance with no strings attached and nothing to repay. Grant types vary and usually a student’s income is scrutinized.
A work study program is a good way to get money to pay for a college degree program. This involves working while studying and most often involves working at the college the student is attending.
If a student wants federal aid, he or she will need to fill out the application called the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application can be obtained on the FAFSA website.
There are options out there to assist students and parents with the rising costs of college educations and students and their parents are encouraged to begin the search for assistance early.

It is not necessary for a student to attend a big name university in order to obtain a top notch education. Local and community colleges offer great educational programs that should not be overlooked. If you are looking into earning a college degree, take a close look at the local community college in your area to see if they have a program that you’d be interested in.
Prestige is not a synonym for good teaching. Many unknown community and local colleges actually offer more challenging educations than do many well-known four-year universities.
Attending a local or community college also saves you an incredible amount of money in tuition fees. If you attend a local or community college, you can still live at home while you study, saving you even more money that you would have to spend to pay for room and board at a larger college or university.
Students who attend these smaller, local schools get more personal attention from the instructors. The smaller schools tend to have smaller class sizes, so the students are more engaged with the instructors, and tend to grasp subjects quicker than students in large classrooms at big universities.
