New Guidelines For Young Athletes with Concussions Stirs Controversy

Experts in the field of brain injury, are debating over whether the new strict rules  regarding concussions can lead to greater risk for athletes. In the May 2009 issue of The British Journal of Sports Medicine, a panel of neurologists updated their recommendations on the care of concussions. This is important information for high school and college athletes.

The new recommendation is that if an 18 year or younger athlete has sustained a concussion during a sports game or practice should not be allowed on the playing field the same day.  Previously the group said that these athletes could return to the game if they were cleared by a doctor or a athletic trainer. They now feel that is is too dangerous for athletes to continue playing following a concussion.

Doctors who are on the sidelines of many high school sporting events fear that the athletes will now hide their injuries from the coaches so that they can continue to partake in the sport, leaving them at an even higher risk for another concussion. The new guidelines has no direct effects on the rules that govern youth sports in the United States, as these recommendations are made at the local and state levels.

The new guidelines do however compromise attempts to improve concussion-related safety and it reaches into the NFL as well.

Connecticut School District Ditches Algebra Textbooks and Goes Online

Math students in Westport, Connecticut used to race through their Algebra I textbooks just to spend the beginning of Algebra II trying to relearn everything that they failed to understand the first time around. The math teachers became very frustrated and decided to revamp the entire algebra curriculum by limiting it to only half of the 90 concepts that are normally covered in a basic high school algebra class with the hopes that the students will better understand the key concepts.

In 2008, these teachers replaced the thick algebra textbooks with their own online curriculum. The lessons are written in Westport and sent to India to a program called Hey Math that jazzes up the algorithms and problem sets with fun sounds and animations.

The curriculum has been built from original lessons and assignments as well as material borrowed from the internet, books and conferences. The teachers want to balance traditional teacher-instructed work with exercises that the students do that encourages exploration. The program is set to save the Westport school district at least $25,000 a year on textbooks.

Many teachers and parents in the Westport school district say that their children are focusing better on difficult concepts and the students say that math is now easier to understand with the graphics and animation. This new method will also help students prepare for future college courses that may be conducted online.

New York Man Quits Hedge Fund Job To Create Math Museum

Glen Whitney, 40, of Stony Brook, New York has called it quits at his hedge fund job to dedicate his time to develop every school child’s nightmare-a museum that features nothing but mathematics. Whitney is quoted as saying “Math is an ongoing, living and developing thing that is beautiful and can be a lot of fun”. To those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve a complex calculus problem, his description may sound very odd.

Whitney says he wants to exhibit things in math that are very much related to everyday life such as sports, card playing and traffic management.  Whitney will have an exhibition at the upcoming World Science Festival Street Fair this weekend in New York City. The exhibition is geared to get people to start seeing that mathematics can be interesting.

Whitney first became very interested in math as a teen when he attended summer camp. He went on to earn a PhD, but he wanted to give to the community, so the father of two daughters left his position as an analyst in 2008 to pursue his dream of opening a math museum. He has many display ideas for the museum that will be geared toward junior and high school students and he hopes that the museum can be built in Manhattan in a few years.

Philadelphia Teachers Puzzled By Individual Contracts

Teachers in the Philadelphia school district are being asked, for the first time in decades, to sign individual contracts and this has them very worried and in a panic. The contracts do not contain any salary amount and the teachers, who are represented by a union and are covered under a labor agreement until its expiration in August, are perplexed by the blank spot on the contract that should contain a salary.

Teachers are frantically asking if they should sign these contracts they received in the mail with a deadline given as June 19th.  Estelle Matthews is the Philadelphia School District human resource chief and says that there is no mystery.  She says that the Pennsylvania school code requires that teachers have individual contracts and she says she is aware also that the teachers in Philadelphia have not had contracts in 20 years. She also states that the contracts do not supersede the collective bargaining agreement with the union.

The teacher’s union is advising the teachers not to sign the contracts and Matthews admits she does not know what the penalty is for noncompliance. Matthews says she is getting bombarded by telephone calls and also states that there was no intention to upset people.

The Values of a good College Education

If you are a high school senior and are questioning whether or not to pursue a college degree upon graduation, how do you decide?

By having a college education you will earn more money. Your life quality will be better and you will have the power to change the world.

If you have a college education, this is something that you can pass onto your children. Having a college education also allows you to be a major contributor to the greatest nation on earth as well.

A family that is headed by a person with a bachelor’s degree will make $1.6 million more than the income of the family that is headed by a person with a high school diploma.

A college education is a very profitable investment. Each dollar that is spent on a college education produces $34.85 in increased lifetime income. This is an investment yield that would turn the head of any Wall Street broker.

The only thing that costs more than getting a college education is not getting one. The increased income empowers you to make choices that will enrich your life greatly.

College Degree Equals Value

Due to the ever-climbing cost of a college degree, many people are starting to question the value of going on to college after high school. Some people wonder if the high cost and the accumulation of thousands of dollars of debt is worth the investment in the long run. This is especially true for low-income students and families that have a hard time just keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table.

In order to find out if a college education is worth the investment you should look at what is known about this value and the rates of return on your investment.

Actually there is a lot of evidence in favor of the rate of return on investment in a higher education. College grads earn more money than non-college graduates. Actually a college grad can earn $2.1 million over a lifetime while a high school grad only earns on average, $1.2 million. This big difference puts the cost of college study into perspective. Nearly 80 percent of all students today either enroll in a two or a four year college.

It is a fact also that college grads have more benefits besides just the increased income. College graduates can save more money and have more hobbies and leisure activities than the non-college graduates.

Explore your Interests

What are you really good at and is there something that you love to do? Your interests can determine what career you may have in the future, regardless if it is playing sports or playing an instrument.

If you are a high school senior and you are considering earning a college degree in the future, you should talk with your high school counselor. It is a great idea to make a list of your specific skills and interests. Give some thought as to what you enjoy and what you excel at.

Next, look into the types of jobs that you find interesting along with requirements that must be met in order to have such a job. Be sure to choose a career goal. Once you have narrowed down what occupation you are suited for you can begin to develop a plan to reach that goal.

Find out what kind of education and training the career requires and then look at the schools that offer college degree programs in that area. Take your time to choose a school that you are well-suited for and then find out about financial aid.

Why High School Seniors Should Choose College

Your final year in high school can seem like a blur due to so much happening in such a short period of time. It is very important to take a step back and remember the reasons you are going through all of this and how an investment in college can really pay off.

The more educated you are, the greater your chances for getting a great job. By 2028 it is estimated that there will be 19 million more jobs available for the educated workers than there are qualified individuals to fill them.

Surely you have heard by now that if you go on to college and earn a college degree, that you will be earning much more money than your high school classmates who chose not to attend college.

In this day and age, going on with your education is much more important than it was when your parents were your age. Today the good jobs out there require more than a high school diploma. Businesses are interested in hiring people who know how to think and solve complex problems.

How to Prepare to Enroll in an Online College

There may be a few prerequisites that must be met in order to begin to take classes in an online degree program. Different schools have different prerequisites, so be sure to check the school’s admission pages.

For example, if you wish to earn a college degree and earn a bachelor’s degree, you will have to have either a high school diploma or GED or an associate’s degree. Certification programs require that you have a job in the chosen field in which you wish to earn certification.

If you choose nursing, you must have prior experience in the field. Most of the people who earn degrees online are interested in advancing their careers and this is very true of nurses.

If you wish to earn an associate degree and have never attended college, you must be at least 18 years old, have internet access and in some cases already have a job of some sort or at the very least, a high school diploma.

These requirements are in place to ensure that the students will be able to understand the material in the online courses and can actually complete the work.
