New Guidelines For Young Athletes with Concussions Stirs Controversy

Experts in the field of brain injury, are debating over whether the new strict rules  regarding concussions can lead to greater risk for athletes. In the May 2009 issue of The British Journal of Sports Medicine, a panel of neurologists updated their recommendations on the care of concussions. This is important information for high school and college athletes.

The new recommendation is that if an 18 year or younger athlete has sustained a concussion during a sports game or practice should not be allowed on the playing field the same day.  Previously the group said that these athletes could return to the game if they were cleared by a doctor or a athletic trainer. They now feel that is is too dangerous for athletes to continue playing following a concussion.

Doctors who are on the sidelines of many high school sporting events fear that the athletes will now hide their injuries from the coaches so that they can continue to partake in the sport, leaving them at an even higher risk for another concussion. The new guidelines has no direct effects on the rules that govern youth sports in the United States, as these recommendations are made at the local and state levels.

The new guidelines do however compromise attempts to improve concussion-related safety and it reaches into the NFL as well.
