New York Man Quits Hedge Fund Job To Create Math Museum
Glen Whitney, 40, of Stony Brook, New York has called it quits at his hedge fund job to dedicate his time to develop every school child’s nightmare-a museum that features nothing but mathematics. Whitney is quoted as saying “Math is an ongoing, living and developing thing that is beautiful and can be a lot of fun”. To those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve a complex calculus problem, his description may sound very odd.
Whitney says he wants to exhibit things in math that are very much related to everyday life such as sports, card playing and traffic management. Whitney will have an exhibition at the upcoming World Science Festival Street Fair this weekend in New York City. The exhibition is geared to get people to start seeing that mathematics can be interesting.
Whitney first became very interested in math as a teen when he attended summer camp. He went on to earn a PhD, but he wanted to give to the community, so the father of two daughters left his position as an analyst in 2008 to pursue his dream of opening a math museum. He has many display ideas for the museum that will be geared toward junior and high school students and he hopes that the museum can be built in Manhattan in a few years.
