Pros and Cons of Taking Time off College

It is an undeniable fact how the cost of a college education has skyrocketed in recent years. With the financial downturn the economy is now experiencing, more and more students are considering dropping out of college.

In most circumstances, there are several pros and cons for taking time off college. One of the pros when taking a time off from your studies is that you can take a job and have more time to earn money to save towards your degree when you return to college. Some students utilize their time off by immersing themselves in the field of study that their intended degree will be in by interning or volunteering with an organization that specializes in the industry.

While these experiences may not necessarily affect your resume, they will certainly show potential employers that you are passionate about your area of study. You will also gain indispensible hands-on experience and knowledge.

Taking some time away from college also helps you assess whether  you plan on following a different career path or not. However, the most obvious disadvantage of taking time off is that you will definitely fall behind in your college classes. Time is the one thing you cannot get back and, in most cases, cannot afford to lose. Some students that take a temporary the hiatus from school discover that it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things. This can be due to increased responsibilities or a change in their career focus and goals.

Either way, you should weigh the pros and cons carefully before deciding if you will take a break from school.
