Receive $2,500 Back in College Tuition
Parents and students all over the country are struggling to raise money for college, but soon they could be in for a big surprise as the higher education tax credit could give them a tax refund of up to $2,500.
The tax credit is a part of the stimulus bill that was signed into effect in February of 2008. This is expected to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to Americans who are paying tuition this year. Even better, students do not have to complete any extra financial aid applications to get the money. They just have to file their taxes accurately and on time. This is welcome news for students enrolling in college degree programs.
The rules are a bit complicated, but the new credit is bigger than previous higher education tax credits that only gave about $900. Not every student is qualified as it is only available for undergrads who attend college at least half time.
These students must have gross incomes of less than $80,000 if they are single and $160,000 if filing jointly in order to qualify. The tax credit is a good incentive for college students and their parents and comes at a time when it is sorely needed.
For households with multiple students attending college the program is great. If parents have four students in college for example, they are eligible for each of their children. This tax credit is greatly appreciated and highly anticipated by students and parents alike.
