Online classes have been in existence for nearly twenty years now but enrollment is at an all-time high. In 2008, over 4.6 million college students were taking at least one online course.

Large schools such as Rutgers and the University of California are planning on expanding their online course as a way to push tuition costs down. It has been found that online education is very beneficial to students as it is very flexible and allows students who may otherwise not be able to afford college a way to obtain a degree.

Online learning is growing much more rapidly than traditional enrollment for the past six years as nearly one in four college students today are taking at least on class online. Even though the term ‘online learning’ seems to portray a learning method that is far removed from traditional college learning, it is not that way. Online students have to meet the same requirements as those students who attend traditional colleges and they can interact with other students on the internet.

The popularity of earning an online college degree is expected to rise over the next several years so this ‘trend’ will most likely become a way of life for many.

—————————————————————————————

Susan Li, a senior at the University of California Los Angeles, needed three classes to qualify for financial aid but one week before the start of classes, she had only registered herself in one class because the school was not offering the courses she needed.

The classes were full or not being offered and if she cannot complete what is needed to graduate, she doubts that she can afford a fifth year as she already has $8,000 in student loans.

The school faces a $131 million budget deficit this year and this student is one of many who is feeling the pinch. UCLA has cut 165 classes which is a ten percent reduction. Ms. Li joined hundreds of other students in a protest against these cutbacks and a rise in tuition fees.

UCLA is not alone in this pinch as universities across the nation are cutting back college classes and putting students in peril of graduating during these tough economic times. In spite of this, more and more people wish to attend college and the large flagship schools are attracting more students then every before.

—————————————————————————————

Johnny Williams, aged 30, has some great names on his resume such as JP Morgan Chase and the University of Chicago. When he graduated from business school last year, he did not have much success obtaining job interviews and as a result he deleted his resume of details such as his membership in the African-American business students association.

In a similar situation, Jabbar Sykes, 37 has a math degree from Morehouse College. He now uses the name Barry Sykes while searching for work although he has used the name Jabbar his entire life.

Race continues to be an obstacle in the job market for African Americans regardless that they have respected college degrees. The African American unemployment rate is twice that of what it is for caucasian’s and studies have found that applicants with ‘ethnic sounding’ names receive 50% few callbacks than those who have ‘traditional sounding’ names.

Last week, thousands of college students across the country staged rallies in protests against deep education cuts. There were dozens of college campuses that were hit with strikes and marches in what was called the March 4th National Day of Action for public education.

The economic downturn has forced many states to cut funding to public schools, community colleges and universities in order to deal with falling tax revenues as they increase tuition costs. As federal stimulus money is drained, colleges could very well face more financial problems over the next several years.

Students at the University of California-Santa Cruz campus held a strike that lasted all day long, shutting off access to the campus at several points and rallying on campus. Students were angry about the 41 percent increase in tuition fees that has occurred over the past year alone and were upset also that popular programs had been cut.

A graduate student was heard saying that it is odd that the largest economy in the world cannot fund the basics and went on to say that the US is throwing away an entire generation of students by de-funding education. Many university officials said that they were in full support of the student protesters as public education is essential for ensuring that our society will succeed in the future.

—————————————————————————————

The US government provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who wish to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low income families. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education or TEACH is the program to thank for this.

The US Dept of Education’s federal student aid programs are the largest source of student assistance in the United States. If you want to receive some money for attending college, this is the place to come. The US government has given out over $100 billion a year in grants, loans and work study programs.

If you are interested, just visit the US Dept of Education’s website. You should also plan to fill out the FAFSA form in order to become eligible for assistance. This form can be obtained online and you will need to provide information concerning your income and other personal data on the form.
Nearly every college uses the FAFSA to award federal student aid to their students. The form is free to fill out and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

There is no reason for any US citizen not to attend college today just because they do not have the money ‘in pocket’. The US government offers a considerable amount of financial assistance to students from all walks of life so be sure to visit the website and find out more.

In 1992, the National Adult Literacy Survey found that 25% of adults were in the lowest level of proficiency. The Level 1 group included 25% immigrants who were learning to speak English.

Sixty-two percent in the Level 1 population had ended their education before finishing high school. A quarter of these people were 65 years old or older and 26% of them had a physical, mental or health condition that kept them from participating fully in work or school.

The relationship between adults’ health conditions and their literacy levels vary depending on the condition. Adults with hearing difficulties for example or a speech disability usually have Level 1 skills. The estimates of literacy related skills in the US are of course subject to potential bias to due non-response at the different levels of data collection.

Literacy has and continues to be a problem in the United States and one that is being closely watched and dealt with by various government entities. We certainly do not want to see the number of people in the US at Level 1 to continue to grow so much is being done to address this problem. Adult community education classes are offered all across the country to assist adults living in the United States to learn to read and to even earn their GED.

—————————————————————————————

Registered nurses are in high demand today. No matter where you live in the United States, you can bet that you can find a great paying job as an RN in your town or city. Nursing is a ‘recession proof’ career meaning that no matter how poorly the economy is doing, there will always be a high demand for nurses.

A registered nurse is responsible for meeting the needs of his/her patients who are suffering from illness or injury. Registered nurses commonly work in operating rooms, intensive care, doctor’s offices, healthcare clinics and nursing homes.

If you are a natural born caretaker and would like an exciting career in nursing, then you should consider signing up for a registered nursing program in order to earn your certification.

You have the option of earning an associate’s degree in nursing, a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing or a nursing diploma. There are schools all across the US that offer outstanding nursing programs so you only need to choose one that suits your needs.
